8th grade math

7th graders study fractions, decimals, square roots, proportions, pre-algebra, geometry and statistics. Each topic is outlined below.

Number system:

  • This is the explanation of Common Core number work expectations for 8th grade from the site Illustrative Math:

    • Know that there are numbers that are not rational and approximate them with rationale numbers.

(If you would like to see a more detailed explanation of each bullet click, here and navigate to 8th grade Number System.)

  • We also review the following topics:

    • adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers (fractions, decimal numbers, and mixed numbers including negative numbers).

Ratios and Proportional Relationships:

  • In 8th grade math we review 7th grade work with ratio and proportions.

Expressions and Equations:

  • This is the explanation of Common Core equation work expectations for 7th grade from the site Illustrative Math:

    • Use property of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

    • Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Statistics and Probability:

  • This is the explanation of Common Core statistics and probability work expectations for 7th grade from the site Illustrative Math:

    • Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.

    • Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

    • Investigate chance processes and develop, use and evaluate probability models.
